Post-Graduation Work Regulation

Australia offers post-graduation work permits to international students who have completed a degree or qualification from an Australian educational institution. This is part of Australia’s effort to attract skilled workers and retain talent in key sectors, allowing graduates to gain work experience in Australia after completing their studies.

Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485)

The Temporary Graduate Visa (subclass 485) is the primary visa for international students who have completed their studies in Australia and want to stay and work temporarily.

Graduate Work Stream

This stream is designed for international students who have completed a degree or diploma that relates to an occupation on Australia’s Skilled Occupation List (SOL). The visa is granted for 18 months and allows an individual to work full-time in any job related to your qualifications. However, it’s important to note that the work must relate to an occupation listed on Australia’s Skilled Occupation List for it to be eligible for certain immigration pathways later.

Post-Study Work Stream

This stream is available to international students who have completed a higher education degree (bachelor’s, master’s, or PhD) from an Australian university or education provider. The length of this visa depends on the level of qualification completed,

  • Bachelor’s degree: 2 years
  • Master’s degree (by coursework or research): 2 to 3 years
  • Doctoral degree (PhD): 4 years

The visa-holder can work full-time in any field. This stream is designed to help graduates gain relevant work experience in Australia. In case of a master’s degree, this visa is granted only if a student completes 2 academic years (4 semesters) of graduate study.
